Hello, my name is Sophie and I am a person-centred counsellor specialising in working with people with dementia and their families.

A diagnosis of dementia causes distress and uncertainty to the person with dementia as well as their loved ones. It can feel as though there is little hope and whilst the medical side is being addressed a person's emotional and mental health can be forgotten when that is needed more than ever.

Person-centred counselling can be a valuable tool for both people with dementia and their families. By fostering a safe space and bringing empathy and understanding I can assist the client to express their emotions, share life stories and find meaning in their present experiences. For families, counselling provides a safe space to talk and be heard, this can strengthen bonds and increase resilience.

I pride myself in holding a safe space with each individual client, whether it is a home visit or within my comfortable counselling room

I am based near Heathfield and cover Hailsham, Polegate, Horam, Eastbourne, Uckfield and Mayfield

Who I am

My name is Sophie Carpenter and I welcome you to Safe Haven Counselling Services, I am a mum and a person-centred counsellor. I have worked in community counselling and as a bereavement counsellor as part of St Wilfrid’s Hospice. I have worked with people with dementia and their families for twenty four years. I left my last role as a wellbeing co-ordinator to pursue a career in counselling after realising that I wanted to offer more to the adults I was working for. I qualified in the summer of 2024 and went straight into a postgraduate masters degree in dementia studies in order to become a specialist dementia therapist. I am opening the Safe Haven to offer counselling to anyone who needs it. I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

I am happy to announce that I can offer home visits as well as sessions in my counselling room.

I will be operating a sliding scale of fees on receipt of benefits.
